Aviation Crew ID Card Requirements

Airport-by-airport breakdown of flight crew identification requirements, SIDA badge procedures, and how digital verification is changing the landscape.

Why Crew ID Matters

Every commercial airport has identification requirements for personnel who access secure areas. Flight crew members need proper identification to move through airport security, access ramp areas, and board aircraft. The requirements vary by airport, creating a complex patchwork that operators must navigate.

Types of Airport ID

SIDA Badge (Security Identification Display Area)

The primary badge for access to secure areas of airports regulated under 49 CFR Part 1542. SIDA badges are:

  • Airport-specific (each airport issues its own)
  • Require background checks (criminal history records check, or CHRC)
  • Must be displayed at all times in secure areas
  • Typically valid for 1-2 years

Airline/Company ID

Airlines and charter operators issue their own identification to crew members. These typically include:

  • Employee photo and name
  • Company logo and employee number
  • Position/role designation
  • Expiration date
  • Security features (hologram, microprint, QR code)

KCM (Known Crewmember)

The KCM program allows verified flight crew members to bypass standard TSA screening at participating airports. Requirements include:

  • Valid company-issued crew ID
  • Active airline or Part 135 operator participation
  • Electronic verification against airline crew databases

The Problem with Current Systems

The current crew identification landscape has significant pain points:

  • No standardization — Every airport and operator has different ID formats
  • Slow verification — Manual checks, phone calls to verify credentials
  • No instant revocation — When someone leaves a company, their badge may remain active for days or weeks
  • Paper-heavy — Multiple copies of certificates carried to each new employer
  • How FlyCertify Solves This

FlyCertify's digital credential system addresses every one of these pain points:

    • Standardized format with QR verification that works across all operators
    • Instant verification — scan a QR code, see live credential status
    • Instant invalidation — deactivate any badge with one click
    • Digital-first — verified credentials accessible from any device

For employers, the FlyCertify dashboard provides real-time control over every badge issued. No more calling HR to confirm someone's employment status.
